Victoria Street Market – un arrêt shopping unique et coloré à Durban

Le Victoria Street Market, appelé Vic par ses commerçants et habitués, est l’endroit idéal pour ramener un ou deux souvenirs à la maison.

Laissez vos sens s’imprégner des odeurs, des sons et des goûts des différentes épices et d’encens ou laissez votre vue s’imprégner des tissus vibrants et colorés. Aucune visite à Durban n’est complète sans un arrêt ici. Au Victoria Street Market, la couleur est partout, des hommes dans leurs kurtas traditionnels et des femmes dans leurs saris aux tas d’épices d’or et de rouge.

En parcourant les 170 stands du marché situé au coin de Victoria Street et Queen Street, vous trouverez un mélange éclectique de produits africains et indiens, unique en Afrique du Sud. Au rez-de-chaussée, vous trouverez un marché de poissons et de fruits de mer, de la viande fraîche, des fruits, des légumes et des épices.

Un morceau d’Inde en Afrique du Sud

Le dernier étage est très populaire auprès des visiteurs internationaux, offrant des achats plus conventionnels de souvenirs, d’artisanat, de bijoux et de tissus. Et si le marchandage est votre truc, au Victoria Street Market, ce n’est pas seulement amusant, c’est attendu. Autrement dit, le prix annoncé n’est jamais ce que vous devriez payer.

La ville de Durban (eThekwini) abrite l’une des plus grandes populations d’Indiens en dehors de l’Inde, et le marché est le reflet des liens historiques de la ville avec l’Inde.

Si l’actuel marché de Victoria Street a été construit au début des années 1980, il a remplacé le célèbre marché indien qui datait de 1910, mais qui a été détruit par un incendie en 1973. Le nouveau bâtiment moderne compte deux étages avec un parking souterrain et des minarets indiens violets qui font que le marché ressemble à un palais du Maharajah.
